Bathroom & En Suite | Napier Villa

A calm, contemporary reimagining in a character home

Leigh and Chris live in a beautiful old villa in Napier—full of history, soul, and thoughtful updates. While it’s not their forever home, they knew they’d be staying for another 10–15 years and wanted the bathrooms to truly reflect their own style and needs—not just be designed for resale.

The goal was to elevate the existing spaces into calming, contemporary retreats, while keeping the character of the villa intact. The layouts didn’t need much reworking, but the materials and mood needed an overhaul—something refined, modern, and softly expressive.

We drew inspiration from the couple’s already stunning kitchen—oak and black-stained cabinetry with crisp white stone—and gently echoed that material story in both bathrooms through joinery and colour choices, ensuring flow throughout the home.

A layered, light-filled bathroom

In the main bathroom, we kept the layout but introduced tactile layers and a gentle flow of tone and texture. A deep green glazed tile lines the main wall, its imperfect surface catching the light and creating softness against the fresh white of the bath and marble-look benchtop.

Black tapware adds contrast and anchors the space, while a softly rounded mirror and floating black shelves bring a hint of modernity. The timber floors and pale walls keep the room grounded and warm, allowing the statement tile to sing without overpowering.

A bold but serene en suite

For the en suite, we embraced a moodier palette with real depth and edge. The teal-toned vertical kit-kat tiles are rich and expressive, paired with honed marble-look porcelain and matt black fixtures. The custom niche shelves add practical beauty, giving form to the function in a space that feels both fresh and quietly luxurious.

The shower fitting is minimalist and sculptural, allowing the tiles and their rhythm to take centre stage. Leigh had chosen a beautiful tealy-coloured basin that tied in perfectly with the vision, bringing a sense of individuality to the space.

A cohesive connection

Together, the two rooms feel like siblings: distinct but harmonious. The bathroom is lighter and more relaxed, while the en suite is richer and more atmospheric—both offering moments of calm, beauty, and everyday pleasure.
